Brain Food
Better scores in reading, math, and social skills are consistently associated with early music education. Music simultaneously uses all eight centers of the brain at once. Childhood is a magic time that follows us the rest of our lives. During the window from 3 to 7 years old, the butons on the dendrites of the nerves are measurably encoded for the rest of the individual's lifetime.
How?
After simple vocal imitation and memorization of basic rhythm syllables, participants invent their own patterns and lead the group. The vocal exercises allow natural structures for integrating drums and percussion. Eventually, participants learn to phase multiple layers in ensemble, frame shorter patterns with longer ones, and listen critically in free improvisation.
Adult Seminars and Classes
(3 to 10 hours, or longer; multiple sessions )
In response to our high-pace world -- more and more adults are part of a revival of group chanting, drumming and dancing. Drum Talk is a modern approach to an ancient method chanting vocal syllable patterns to prepare for drumming -- in other words: to "Play What You Say." Ancient cultures never separated drumming, chanting, and dancing. Drum Talk emphasizes improvisation, self-expression, listening, group communication, community, and leadership.

Teacher Training and Artist In Residencies
George has been a full time Artist In Residence in public schools and universities since 1991, usually doing 20 to 40 hour projects. The next evolution for Drum Talk is teacher training. Dr. Bruce Saperston of Utah is writing a series of manuals titled George Grants Drum Talk
State University.
